Bouldering and lead climbing are the two important disciplines within the sport of climbing.
Bouldering has been gaining traction over the years with several bouldering-only gyms popping up all over Australia and throughout the world.
Bouldering is exactly what it sounds like, climbing a boulder. Generally, the climbs stay low to the ground and are done with no ropes. In our gyms, we have large crash mats at the base of our bouldering walls to cushion your fall. Bouldering is a great way to build strength and improve climbing technique.
If it’s your first time bouldering in our gyms, our staff will teach you how to use our bouldering facilities safely and how to fall correctly. It’s important that these safety instructions are followed – the majority of injuries that occur in our gyms happen while bouldering.
Lead Climbing is a different type of rope climbing.
Unlike top-rope climbing where you have a pulley device set up above you, lead climbing tests your skills by making you clip yourself into quick-draws on the wall, taking your rope up with you as you go.
Itβs a form of climbing not for the fainthearted and should be learned with an experienced instructor who can show you proper clipping and belay technique. You must have a lead pass to show to our employees in order to lead climb at our gyms. You can obtain a lead pass in one of two ways β the first is to attend our lead climbing course. We generally only offer the lead course and lead checks to climbers aged 16 years and older. Please see our lead course page for more information.
While we would recommend the lead course, we also understand that for someone that has been leading for several years that you might not want to spend the money learning something you already know. For this reason we do offer β by bookings only β the option to be ticked off to lead in our gyms by an experienced lead climbing staff member. Contact us to set up an appointment.
Not all of our staff members are approved to do lead checks, so it’s important to schedule a lead-check appointment with us.
We do not hire out lead climbing gear (ropes, locking carabiners, belay devices). Once you have a lead pass, you need to use your own equipment to lead climb at our gyms.
